Formed in 2000, the SRRC has had several people involved in it’s
conception and development. Based loosely on the previous organizing
body, the Island Motorcycle Racing Association (IMRA), the SRRC
had a new track layout to race on. The IMRA club used the standard
tri-oval track from 1992, until a bad accident into the concrete
wall in 1996 forced the racing of motorcycles to be cancelled
indefinitely due to safety concerns.
Later that same year the track started construction of a short
drag strip. The drag strip run off connects the straight away
to the dogleg section of the track, which could allow motorcycles
to use the run off section instead of turn 4, which would alleviate
heading towards the wall along the front straight.
By the end of 1999, there were enough riders and interested volunteers
to organize a club again. With different champions almost every
year, the SRRC provides close racing at an easily accessible level.
The series has seen some well-known racers since 1992, with top
Westwood Pro racers like Darryl Fletcher and John Schwarze.
